Residency 2026

We are searching for curious explorers to participate in a residency at Nomad City. We have two types of residencies available, each with their own level of experience and commitment.

1. EXPERIENCE RESIDENCY, 1-2 WEEKS

During this residency you can experience our everyday life at the Nomad City settlement in which we are researching various ways of sustainable and communal living. You sleep in a tiny home build on a horse carriage, use our low-tech household structures and try out an overal minimalistic way of life that is in tune with our natural environment. We expect a half time commitment in which you can help out with various projects on the site. We always try to match these projects with the interests of each resident. During these projects we also take our time to help with improving your building skills, share knowledge on gardening, food preservation, tool maintenance... But we are also eager to learn from your experience and insights. Check out our Infrastructure

“What I find very exciting about Nomad City is that instead of leaving the city life behind altogether and trying an alternative way of life in a remote land, it directly tests the possibilities of alternatives in the city, creating a moment of surprise and reflection for the residents of the city.”

“During my residency I went outside of my comfort zone, trying to convince the locals of Hasselt to participate in my project. In the end everything worked out exactly how I hoped it would. Next time when I have another idea for a project, I already know this feeling of uncertainty and I will be able to convince myself that it will al work out”

2. PROJECT RESIDENCY, >1 MONTH

At Nomad City we wish to initiate a few projects for which we want to welcome people who have experience within these specific fields of work. During this residency you get the chance to lead one of these projects while relying on our infrastructure, tools and assistance. In exchange for your time and energy we want to offer you our hospitality, providing you with free accommodation and food during your stay and share with you everything we have learned so far regarding sustainable and communal living. Besides the work we do you become a part of our everyday life at the Nomad City settlement. Below you find the current projects:

  • Community House Design and Construction
  • Loam Oven Design & Construction
  • Water Filtration Design & Construction
  • Root Cellar Design & Construction
  • Pond Design & Construction
  • You can also propose your own project regarding sustainable and communal living

“I enjoyed the half-time commitment that was expected within the residency. This allowed me to shift my focus between my own projects and the overall life within Nomad City, making it possible to look at both worlds with a fresh pair of eyes.”

“The Nomad City team sees the world as their oyster. They collect wood on the side of the road, already knowing how it can be implemented in a construction and they ride their cargo bike to the other side of the city to collect leftover clay to build a pizza oven. They don’t get stuck overthinking, they simply begin and see where their enthusiasm will take them.”

“Being a part of Nomad City didn’t feel like a project, it felt like living in a domestic space that is constantly being improved while you are living inside of it. It was also interesting how the public and private space are constantly blending into each other.”

"My one-week residency at Nomad City was deeply inspiring. I wanted to experience life in a tiny house and immerse myself in its self-sufficient way of life. I embraced the absence of digital distractions and was especially inspired by Stef and Elke’s passion for caring for the Earth. Their philosophy and lessons resonated deeply, and I’m eager to integrate them into my life, knowing that caring for humanity and nature are two sides of the same coin.” -

“During my residency I was inspired by the determination to make their project work. I never thought it would be possible to initiate such a concept in the middle of schools and neighborhoods.”

“I experienced Nomad City, not so much as a residency, but more as an engagement with a living art work. During my time there I became aware once again of some values that I knew I had, but didn’t yet explore further.”
