Con’s

Plant Based Liquid Fertilizer

Pro’s

‣
Natural Nutrients:

Plant-based liquid fertilizers often contain natural nutrients like nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus that promote healthy plant growth without relying on synthetic chemicals.

‣
Quick Absorption:

The liquid form allows plants to absorb nutrients quickly through their roots and leaves, offering faster results compared to solid fertilizers.

‣
Eco-Friendly:

Since it's made from organic plant matter, it's often more environmentally friendly and sustainable. It helps improve soil health without contributing to chemical runoff, which can harm ecosystems.

‣
Versatile Use:

You can use it for various plants, from vegetables to flowers, making it a versatile option for different types of gardens.

‣
Boosts Soil Health:

In addition to feeding plants, plant-based fertilizers can improve the microbial activity in the soil, promoting long-term soil fertility.

‣
Low Toxicity:

It’s generally safer for pets, children, and beneficial insects like pollinators compared to chemical fertilizers.

Tips

‣
Fermented Suint Method

At Nomad City we use the Fermented Suint Method to clean our sheep wool in an efficient way. The leftover residue can also be used as a liquid fertilize. You can find this technique here

Con’s

‣
Nutrient Imbalance:

Depending on the source of the fertilizer, it may not have a balanced nutrient profile. Some plant-based fertilizers might be high in one nutrient (e.g., nitrogen) but lack others (e.g., phosphorus), potentially leading to deficiencies if used exclusively.

‣
Shorter Lasting:

Liquid fertilizers may need to be applied more frequently than solid or slow-release fertilizers, as the nutrients are available immediately but may also wash away quickly, especially in heavy rain or overwatering.

‣
Lower Nutrient Concentration:

Plant-based liquid fertilizers generally have lower nutrient concentrations than synthetic or animal-based fertilizers, so you might need larger quantities or more frequent applications to meet the nutritional needs of your plants.

‣
Cost:

If commercially purchased, plant-based liquid fertilizers can sometimes be more expensive than synthetic alternatives, especially if they are organic-certified.

‣
Limited Availability:

Some specific plant-based liquid fertilizers might be harder to find compared to more widely available chemical or animal-based fertilizers.

Chicken Manure

Pro’s

‣
High Nutrient Content:

Chicken manure is rich in key nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, which are essential for plant growth. The nitrogen content, in particular, makes it a strong fertilizer for leafy plants.

‣
Improves Soil Structure:

When composted properly, chicken manure improves soil structure, increasing its water retention and aeration. It encourages a healthier soil ecosystem with improved microbial activity.

‣
Organic and Sustainable:

It’s an organic, natural fertilizer that can help reduce the need for synthetic chemicals in the garden, making it an eco-friendly option.

‣
Cost-Effective:

If you raise chickens, it’s a cost-effective solution as you’re recycling waste. Even if purchased, it is often cheaper than chemical fertilizers.

‣
Long-Lasting Effects:

Once composted, chicken manure slowly releases nutrients over time, providing sustained benefits to the plants and soil.

Tips

  • Don’t use this for root plants

Con’s

‣
Needs Composting:

Fresh chicken manure is too “hot” for direct use because it has high nitrogen content and can burn plants. It needs to be composted for at least 6–12 months to break down properly and become safe to use.

‣
Pathogens:

Chicken manure can contain harmful pathogens like E. coli and Salmonella, which pose risks to human health if not composted properly. Handling it without precautions can contaminate crops, especially those consumed raw like lettuce or carrots.

‣
Odor:

Chicken manure has a strong odor, especially when fresh, which can be unpleasant in certain areas, particularly in small gardens near homes.

‣
Potential Weed Seeds:

If chickens have eaten weeds, their manure may contain weed seeds that could germinate in your garden, leading to more weeds.

‣
Variable Nutrient Levels:

The nutrient content of chicken manure can vary depending on the chickens' diet and how it’s processed. This variability can make it hard to measure the precise nutrient contribution.

‣
Nutrient Imbalance:

Chicken manure is high in nitrogen, which is excellent for promoting green growth but may lead to an imbalance in other nutrients. If overused, it can result in nitrogen toxicity, which can harm plants.
