Isocyanates are a group of highly reactive chemicals used in certain construction products, most commonly spray foam insulation (like PUR/PIR foams) and some coatings or sealants.
Why it matters:
- Isocyanates can cause serious respiratory irritation, asthma, and skin sensitization if inhaled or contacted during application.
- They are most dangerous during installation — once the material has cured, the risk is much lower.
- Tiny, airtight homes require careful handling because fumes can build up quickly in small spaces.
How to handle safely:
- Always use full protective gear (respirator, gloves, goggles) when applying products containing isocyanates.
- Ensure excellent ventilation during and after application.
- Prefer pre-cured or alternative insulation materials (e.g., natural wool, wood fiber) if you want to avoid chemical exposure.
Example:
- Spray polyurethane foam (PU foam) → contains isocyanates, must be installed by professionals.
- Wood fiber insulation → naturally safe, no isocyanates.
