A cavity wall is a wall made of two separate layers (or “leaves”) of masonry, typically brick or block, with a gap (cavity) in between. This space can be left empty or filled with insulation material.
Why it matters:
- The cavity acts as a thermal barrier, reducing heat loss.
- It helps prevent moisture from penetrating from the outside to the inside wall.
- The cavity can also improve sound insulation.
How it works:
- Outer leaf → exposed to weather, protects the building.
- Inner leaf → carries structural loads and supports interior finishes.
- Insulation in the cavity → increases energy efficiency.
