We talked about the state of affairs, which I will summarize briefly:
- Budget: We are still looking for funding so at this moment, we do not have a budget.
- Materials: We started collecting materials from urban harvesting sessions in collaboration with Building Beyond Borders and are still looking for other sources of (waste) materials. We are currently working on a digital inventory in Miro (see below)
- The schedule: Still in very early stages so the dates on the briefing document are a very rough estimate.
After talking about the practical stuff, we went on a little walk around Nomad City to get a feel for the space and to understand the relations with the surroundings. We mapped out the different characteristics of the area regarding sound, light, wind, vegetation, traffic, views and axis of movement.
The walk inspired and motivated us to start a little brainstorming session, so we did an impromptu layout and design exercise. We sketched out different options for the buildings shape, size, orientation and location. These options were then tested on site using poles as corner posts. This way we could get a sense for the space and its relation to its surroundings (see pictures). There is also a Miro board that we had made earlier regarding Nomad City in general. Here’s the link for that.
It really felt like the ball finally started rolling, which is insanely exciting. Now we have to keep it rolling, therefore we would like to suggest the following: a weekly get together to have at least one full day of working on the design and planning. This can also happen remote for those who are not always available to join physically. Everyone has to see what’s feasible for themselves so it’s completely fine if you’re unavailable, we just need to know for planning purposes. For those who are only in it for the construction you are always welcome to join these sessions as well.
