Missie
We dromen over Nomad City: Een stad die bruist van het leven, met op elke hoek van de straat een kleine nederzetting waar een groepje enthousiastelingen onze huidige manier van (samen) wonen in vraag stelt. Zo experimenteren ze met allerlei vormen van samenwonen waarin zorg voor mens en natuur steeds centraal staat. Ze zoeken naar breed gedragen beslissingen waarbij ook rekening gehouden wordt met minderheidsstemmen. De deuren van hun nederzetting staan geregeld open waardoor iedereen de kans krijgt om op verschillende manieren deel te nemen aan het project. Nieuwsgierige buurtbewoners komen langs om mee na te denken over de vele sociale, ecologische en economische uitdagingen die op ons afkomen. Samen zoeken ze antwoorden op vragen als: Hoe kan je een moestuin vormgeven waar zowel mens als andere beestjes van kunnen smullen? Hoe kunnen we onze huizen compacter bouwen met herbruikbare of composteerbare materialen? Welke facilteiten zouden we beter met elkaar delen om de ecologische en economische kost hiervan te minimaliseren? Nieuwsgierigheid zorgt telkens voor een startpunt maar het is de daadkracht van de participanten die zorgt voor acties. Elke participant is hier zowel leerling als leraar, want enkel met een brede waaier aan kennis en invalshoeken slagen we erin om duurzame relaties te bouwen met elkaar en het ecosysteem. Dit nieuwe perspectief verspreidt zich intussen doorheen de hele stad. Steeds meer mensen zien schoonheid in deze bewustere manier van leven. Wie vroeger ecologisch wilde wonen, stootte op heel wat obstakels. Vandaag wordt het bestaansrecht van deze woonvormen erkend, dankzij een breed en groeiend draagvlak.
Visie
Nomad City vertrekt vanuit een zorgzame houding voor mens en omgeving om antwoorden te vinden op de vele sociale, ecologische en economische uitdagingen die ons overweldigen. We omringen ons met enthousiastelingen om kleinschalige en toegankelijke alternatieven in en rond de stad te verkennen en verspreiden. Als netwerk van duurzame relaties met en tussen participanten hopen we elkaar verder te ondersteunen en de gezamenlijke veerkracht te versterken. Zo wil Nomad City een centraal knooppunt zijn dat kruisbestuivingen faciliteert tussen personen, scholen en organisaties. We willen een speelruimte creëren voor de volledige diversiteit aan mensen, organisaties en perspectieven rondom ons. We beschouwen deze veelzijdigheid als een verrijking en kans om elke uitdaging vanuit een bredere blik te onderzoeken. We creëren een platform waarop participanten deze verscheidenheid aan kennis en vaardigheden kunnen delen en doorgeven in de vorm van workshops, lezingen.... Zo wil Nomad City een plek zijn waarbij deze ideeen via verschillende culturele en tijdsgebonden invalshoeken aangeleerd kunnen worden. Nomad City biedt inspiratie, geeft een voorzichtig duwtje in de rug en voorziet ruimte en tijd om te experimenteren. Enerzijds krijgen participanten de kans om actief deel te nemen aan het dagelijks leven op de site. Anderzijds stellen we onze site, infrastructuur en ervaring ter beschikking van externe projecten. Veel projecten van Nomad City hebben een speels, artistiek karakter. We geloven in de kracht van kunst om dialogen te openen, gevestigde ideeën in vraag te stellen en nieuwe werelden te verbeelden. We activeren gronden als reactie op het tekort aan ‘derde ruimtes’ binnen de stad, waar ontmoetingen zonder drempels kunnen plaatsvinden, waar ideëen vrij heen en weer kunnen slingeren en waar we winst en waarde herdefiniëren. Nomad City is een cohousing van vaste en tijdelijke bewoners, waarbij we de zoektocht naar samenlevingsvormen, met respect voor ieders eigenheid en noden, als een voortdurend experiment beschouwen. We organiseren ons participatief en democratisch. We blijven steevast zoeken naar overlegvormen en beslissingsstructuren die alle betrokkenen toegang geven tot inspraak. Nomad City streeft voortdurend naar een utopie van perfecte circulariteit. Dit uit zich in low-tech systemen en huishoudelijke oplossingen die een ecologische levensstijl niet enkel doenbaar maar ook efficiënt en comfortabel maken. In al onze handelingen streven we naar het gebruik van biologisch afbreekbare materialen. Door ons afhankelijk op te stellen van tastbare en zichtbare natuurlijke elementen, trachtten we een nieuwsgierige positie op te wekken. Van daaruit verkennen we verder hoe wij als mens een wederkerige relatie hebben met het globale ecosysteem en op welke manier we onze verantwoordelijk hierin positief kunnen opnemen. De plekken die we mogen bewonen en beleven, worden steeds benaderd vanuit een regeneratieve houding. Bij het vormgeven van onze huishoudelijke structuren proberen we de veerkracht van en diversiteit aan leven te versterken. We initiëren en ondersteunen zelfredzame systemen die ook na ons vertrek kunnen standhouden. ENG
Mission
We dream of Nomad City: a city buzzing with life, where on every street corner there is a small settlement in which a group of enthusiasts questions our current way of (co-)living. In doing so, they experiment with various forms of communal living in which care for both people and nature is always central. They search for broadly supported decisions that also take minority voices into account.
The doors of their settlement are regularly open, giving everyone the opportunity to participate in the project in different ways. Curious neighbors are thus invited to reflect together on the many social, ecological, and economic challenges that lie ahead. Together they look for answers to questions such as: How can you design a vegetable garden that both humans and other creatures can enjoy? How can we build our homes more compactly, using reusable or compostable materials? Which facilities would we be better off sharing in order to minimize their ecological and economic cost? Curiosity is always the starting point, but it is the participants’ decisiveness that leads to action. Every participant is both a student and a teacher, because only through a broad range of knowledge and perspectives can we succeed in building sustainable relationships with one another and with the ecosystem.
This new perspective is now spreading throughout the entire city. More and more people are beginning to see the beauty in this more conscious way of living. In the past, those who wanted to live ecologically encountered many obstacles. Today, the right of these forms of living to exist is being recognized, thanks to a broad and growing base of support.
Vision
Nomad City starts from a caring attitude toward people and their environment in order to find answers to the many social, ecological, and economic challenges that overwhelm us. We surround ourselves with enthusiasts to explore and disseminate small-scale, accessible alternatives in and around the city.
As a network of sustainable relationships with and between participants, we hope to continue supporting one another and to strengthen our collective resilience. In this way, Nomad City aims to be a central node that facilitates cross-pollination between individuals, schools, and organizations.
We want to create a playground for the full diversity of people, organizations, and perspectives around us. We consider this multiplicity an enrichment and an opportunity to approach every challenge from a broader viewpoint.
We create a platform on which participants can share and pass on this diversity of knowledge and skills in the form of workshops, lectures, and more. In this way, Nomad City seeks to be a place where these ideas can be learned through different cultural and time-based perspectives.
Nomad City offers inspiration, gives a gentle push forward, and provides space and time for experimentation. On the one hand, participants are given the opportunity to actively take part in daily life on the site. On the other hand, we make our site, infrastructure, and experience available to external projects.
Many Nomad City projects have a playful, artistic character. We believe in the power of art to open dialogues, question established ideas, and imagine new worlds.
We activate land in response to the lack of “third spaces” within the city—places where barrier-free encounters can take place, where ideas can move freely back and forth, and where we can redefine profit and value.
Nomad City is a co-housing project of permanent and temporary residents, in which we regard the search for forms of living together, respectful of each individual’s uniqueness and needs, as an ongoing experiment.
We organize ourselves in a participatory and democratic way. We continuously search for forms of dialogue and decision-making structures that give all involved access to a voice.
Nomad City continually strives toward a utopia of perfect circularity. This is expressed through low-tech systems and domestic solutions that make an ecological lifestyle not only feasible but also efficient and comfortable. In all our actions, we strive to use biodegradable materials.
By positioning ourselves as dependent on tangible and visible natural elements, we aim to awaken a sense of curiosity. From there, we further explore how we as humans exist in a reciprocal relationship with the global ecosystem, and how we can take up our responsibilities within it in a positive way.
The places we are allowed to inhabit and experience are always approached from a regenerative attitude. In shaping our domestic structures, we seek to strengthen the resilience of life and its diversity. We initiate and support self-reliant systems that can continue to exist even after our departure.
