Pro’s

‣
Water Conservation:

Composting toilets do not require water for flushing, making them an eco-friendly alternative in areas where water scarcity or water conservation is a concern. This can lead to significant water savings, especially in regions prone to drought or water shortages.

‣
Resource Recycling:

Composting toilets convert human waste into compost through natural decomposition processes. The resulting compost, known as "humanure," can be used as a nutrient-rich fertilizer for plants, closing the nutrient loop and reducing the need for synthetic fertilizers.

‣
Reduced Environmental Impact:

By diverting human waste from traditional sewage systems, composting toilets help reduce the pollution of water bodies and minimize the environmental impact of sewage treatment facilities. They also reduce the energy and resources required for sewage treatment and transport.

‣
Versatility:

Composting toilets can be installed in a wide range of settings, including off-grid homes, remote cabins, recreational vehicles, boats, and environmentally sensitive areas where traditional sanitation infrastructure is impractical or unavailable.

‣
Odor Control:

Properly designed and maintained composting toilets effectively manage odors through ventilation systems, cover materials (such as sawdust or peat moss), and microbial activity. When managed correctly, composting toilets do not produce offensive odors.

Tips

‣
Cover Material:

I would advice using very fine saw dust as a cover material, instead of using bigger chunks. The bacteria in your humanure pile will have a harder time to eat the big pieces, temperatures will therefore be lower. This can be a bit dusty, but if you mix some water to the saw dust, this should be fixed.

Pro’s

‣
Durable:

Resistant to corrosion and wear, making them long-lasting.

‣
Easy to Clean:

Non-porous surface prevents odors and is easy to sanitize.

‣
Non-reactive:

Doesn't leach chemicals into the compost.

Con’s

‣
Expensive:

Higher initial cost compared to plastic.

‣
Heavy:

Can be more cumbersome to handle and transport.

Tips

‣
Adding Material:

When adding new material, always dig a deep hole in the middle, while pushing away old material against the straw towards the walls. In this hole you add the new material, this will heat up the temperature, but you are also kind of rotating old material, adding oxygen to the pile.

‣
Pathogen Management:

Proper management of humanure composting is essential to minimize the risk of pathogen transmission and ensure the safety of the composted material. It is best to reach temperatures between 55 and 70 degrees for a few days to break down pathogens

  • You can increase the size of your containers depending on the amount of people in your group.
